Expo Idol is the annual singing competition that runs each spring leading into Capital Expo Festival weekend. Solo vocalists compete at seven preliminary nights held at popular Kentucky venues — bars, restaurants, and entertainment spots from Lawrenceburg to Frankfort. Top finishers advance to the finals.
The finals take place Thursday June 4, 2026 at 8:00 PM on the main Capital Expo stage. Cash prizes for the top vocalists, with the winner crowned Expo Idol and earning bragging rights, prize money, and an open invitation to perform at future festival events.
Seven nights, seven stages.
Show up at any preliminary night, sign up at 7:30 PM, and compete starting at 8:00 PM. Compete at as many as you want — top performers advance to the finals on June 4.

Expo Idol isn’t karaoke — it’s a real performance opportunity. Sing in front of packed crowds during prelims, then take the main Capital Expo Festival stage for finals night. Build your stage presence, get used to a live audience, and put your voice in front of people who came specifically to hear you.
It’s also one of the most fun nights of Capital Expo weekend. Bring your family, your friends, and your nerve. Whether you’re trying to launch a singing career or just love performing — this is your stage.

- Contestants must select a minimum of 3 (three) songs.
- Contestants will choose their first song to sing.
- Judges will select the remaining songs selected by the contestant if the judges request a sing off.
- No duplicate songs will be allowed, so first come, first serve.
- Contestants can choose to use a solo instrument without accompaniment during the competition. Expo will not be responsible for any set up or equipment to be used for the use of instruments.
- Contestants are required to perform a nationally recorded song and cannot perform music they have written.
- Prior Frankfort Idol or Capital Expo Idol title winners are not eligible to compete again.
- Contestants must be 16 years old to compete at public locations that do not have an age limit of 21 years of age.
- Contestant understands that two (2) winners selected at each location are expected to compete at the 2026 Capital Expo Idol Finals, on Thursday, June 4, 2026. Award money will not be given until the night of finals. Failure to show at the mandatory meeting and finals, prize money will be considered forfeited and contestant will be disqualified.
Please also note: Contestants may perform more than one song. Instruments are allowed; however, performers do not bring their own backing music — each location provides the available music, which performers are required to use.

Frequently asked questions.
For preliminary nights, just show up at the venue at 7:30 PM and sign up at the door. For finals, you must have qualified at a preliminary night first. Email capitalexpoidol@gmail.com with any questions about eligibility.
There’s no entry fee to compete in Expo Idol. The preliminary venues are bars, pubs, and restaurants — purchasing food and drinks supports the venue but isn’t required to enter the competition.
Open genre — country, rock, pop, R&B, gospel, musical theater, classical, indie, anything you’d perform vocally. The only requirement is that the song must be family-friendly with no explicit lyrics or profanity.
No — performers do not bring their own backing music. Each preliminary location provides the available music and sound setup, and performers are required to use what is available at that venue. You may also choose to play a solo instrument without accompaniment if you prefer.
Yes! Competing at multiple prelims is a great way to improve your chances of advancing to the finals. Each performance is judged on its own merit, and showing up across multiple nights demonstrates your commitment.
Cash prizes are awarded to the top finishers on finals night, Thursday June 4 at 8 PM. The overall winner is crowned ‘Expo Idol’ for the year. Specific prize amounts and additional awards will be announced at the start of the season.
Expo Idol is open to vocalists of 16 years of age and older.
